The primary component of diatomaceous earth is silicon dioxide, a naturally occurring substance mined from ancient lake beds. Diatomaceous earth is composed of diatoms—fossilized shells of microscopic, water-dwelling organisms. These diatoms, one-celled plants (algae or phytoplankton), have been a part of the Earth's ecosystem since prehistoric times and continue to thrive in both fresh and saltwater environments worldwide.
Diatomaceous earth is composed of 89–95% amorphous silica and contains 15 trace minerals, including phosphorus, selenium, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, copper, zinc, and iron.
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a natural powder with no odor and works through a physical/mechanical action, free of chemical toxicity. Only food-grade DE is suitable for human use.
